Biomedical Engineering is an inter-disciplinary emerging field, which combines two dynamic professions: Medical Science and Engineering with the objectives of improving human health by enriching healthcare engineering. This exciting field concerned with the application of engineering and science methodologies, to the biological and physiological problems and to the efficient delivery of health care. This discipline integrates physical, chemical, mathematical, and computational sciences and engineering principles to study and understand the complex physiological system "the God gifted beautiful living machine-the human being" and facilitating the development of medical electronics devices, systems, instruments, materials, implants and artificial organs. Biomedical engineering involve in ideate, innovate and create devices and procedures that solve medical and health-related problems by combining their knowledge of biology and medicine with engineering principles and practices. This program may also be represented as Medical Electronics Engineering. Biomedical engineering is a blooming area of engineering & technology directly linked with the health care industry and institutions, the job market also witnessed an exponential growth.

Netaji Subhash Engineering College has introduced 4-year B.Tech course in Bio-Medical Engineering since 2003 for the first time in the Eastern region of India. The program is approved by All India Institute of Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India and is affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT). This program integrates the electrical, electronics, instrumentation and computer science engineering with medical sciences. The department provides in depth theoretical knowledge about various kinds of medical instruments and systems and has well equipped laboratories for extensive measurement and analysis. The application of computers, digital systems for bio-signal acquisition, processing and data communication form the crucial part of the curriculum. The department conducts special lectures sessions where students find opportunities to interact with professionals and academicians from reputed industries and educational institutions for their knowledge enhancement and motivation. Continuous professional training program, hospital visit and industrial training help to get experience in real-life situation and make them industry ready.

The department accentuates on strong understanding of biology and physiology, make measurement, interpret data, and solve problems at the interface of engineering and biology. The graduate engineers are trained to use and apply intimate knowledge of modern biological principles in their engineering design processes. The department emphasizes on building a platform for graduate engineering through education, training and technology development for serving the needs for clinical medicine and biomedical industries through workforce and technology development. The graduate engineers get well equipped with the skill to investigate, plan, design, manufacture and maintenance of medical system and equipments. The graduate engineers would be quite capable and ready to serve in biomedical, electronic and computer science fields.
